A municipal electric and fiber utility
Within the city, electricity comes from Traverse City Light & Power (TCL&P), a municipal utility, not one of the big investor-owned companies. TCL&P is building a citywide fiber-to-the-premises network. Its 2024 construction RFP says fiber drops follow each home's existing electric service, overhead or underground, and that underground drops are direct-buried. The same document says 67% of city electric services are overhead today. As of October 2026, TCL&P's fiber page says most outside-plant construction is nearing completion, with work shifting to splicing, testing, and activation.
For anyone digging in town, that means more shallow, recently placed communication lines running alongside existing underground electric services. A notice through MISS DIG reaches member facility owners, and potholing confirms where those drops actually ended up.
