Hydrovac & Hydro Excavation in Battle Creek

Battle Creek sits where the Battle Creek River meets the Kalamazoo River, downstream of the 2010 Line 6B pipeline rupture near Marshall. Digging near transmission pipelines gets extra care here.

Transmission pipelines: the Line 6B lesson

On July 25, 2010, Enbridge's 30-inch Line 6B crude oil pipeline ruptured near Marshall, east of Battle Creek. EPA says at least 843,444 gallons of oil entered Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. EPA ordered dredging of submerged oil, including in the Battle Creek Mill Ponds and Morrow Lake. The NTSB found the rupture was caused by corrosion fatigue cracks under disbonded pipe coating, not by excavation damage. Still, the spill is a reminder of what's buried in Calhoun County.

If your project is near a transmission pipeline, file your MISS DIG notice, contact the pipeline operator early, and ask whether it requires a representative on site. Use soft excavation to expose the line before any mechanical digging. Coating damage from careless digging can create the defects that grow into failures.

Industrial sites

Fort Custer Industrial Park and the city's food-processing plants have private process lines, fire mains, and electrical feeds that MISS DIG won't mark. A private locate plus potholing is the usual approach. See private utility locating.

Typical Battle Creek-area requests

  • Potholing near transmission pipelines and high-pressure gas
  • Private line exposure on industrial sites
  • Service line work in older neighborhoods
  • Industrial pit, sump, and catch basin cleanouts
