Hydro excavation in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids work tends to fall into a few buckets: utility verification ahead of road and water main projects, residential and commercial service line work, fiber and telecom crossings, and potholing ahead of directional drilling along busy corridors and in the suburbs.

Lead service line replacement

The City of Grand Rapids has been replacing lead service lines since 2017. According to the city, about 9,000 have been replaced and roughly 16,500 remain before its 2037 deadline, with about 1,900 replacements planned for fiscal year 2027. Michigan's Lead and Copper Rule requires full, not partial, replacement. Small vacuum "keyhole" excavations are one method contractors use to expose curb stops and check service line material with minimal surface disruption.

Soils and frost

Ground conditions around Grand Rapids vary. The Grand River valley has sandy and gravelly deposits, while upland areas often have heavier glacial till with more clay. Sand digs quickly but can cave into deeper holes, and clay is slower and produces more slurry. In winter, Michigan's 42-inch frost-protection footing depth (Michigan Residential Code R403.1.4) is a reminder that frozen ground can extend well below the surface, so ask about heated-water units.

Utilities

Consumers Energy is the main electric provider in the Grand Rapids area, and the City of Grand Rapids operates the water system. For natural gas service territory, check the MPSC natural gas service area map. Whoever owns the lines, MISS DIG notifies its member facility owners when you file a notice.

Typical Grand Rapids-area requests

  • Curb stop and service line exposure for water system or plumbing contractors
  • Potholing ahead of HDD for fiber builds in Kent and Ottawa counties
  • Pole and sign holes in congested rights-of-way
  • Catch basin and sump cleanouts for commercial properties
